Thetis Island: Located in Stuart Channel - being about 3 miles (4.8 kilometers) north east of Chemainus, Vancouver Island - see Chart. The Island of 10.5 square kilometers (4.1 square miles) has a population of approximately 400 which increases in the summer season. Easily accessed by B.C. Ferry service (frequent/16 minute trip) from Chemainus (population about 4500) on Vancouver Island or by Airplane (float) service from Vancouver and Victoria, boat (private or water taxi). Located approximately 35 miles (56 kilometers) from Vancouver and 46 miles (74 kilometers) from Victoria. The island is mainly forested, with some farms and about 10 miles (16 kilometers) of roads. There is a pub/restaurant, Post Office, small store, community center, elementary school and volunteer fire department. There are two protected marinas plus good moorage at Chemainus. There are no public camping areas or parks on the island. The area is kn own as the 'banana belt' of the Gulf Islands of British Columbia and is noted for warm swimming, fishing, shellfish, boating, kayaking and a great variety of marine and wild life.
